Rhinoplasty / Nose Surgery

Is there a feature of your nose that makes you unhappy? Do you wish it were smaller, rounder or more smooth? Has the appearance of your nose been altered from an injury? If so, you may be a good candidate for Rhinoplasty Surgery.

Cosmetic Nose Surgery Can:

  • Alter the size of your nose, making it appear larger or smaller, wider or thinner
  • Adjust the position and shape of the tip of your nose
  • Increase or decrease the size of your nostrils
  • Smooth out the bridge of your nose- removing any humps or indentations
  • Change the angle of your nose

Last year over 285,000 people in the United States visited their plastic surgeons for rhinoplasty procedures, making it one of the most common of all cosmetic procedures amongst men and women.

Is Rhinoplasty Covered by Insurance

Cosmetic surgery is not typically covered by insurance, unless it is performed as reconstructive procedures after an injury. However, some of the cost of your rhinoplasty surgery may be covered by your insurance provider if you have a deviated septum or other medical condition where a surgical procedure is deemed necessary to fix the problem. Insurance often covers the procedure that improves breathing and a portion of the anesthesia and doctor’s fees if you are having cosmetic work done as well.

Symptoms of a Deviated Septum Include:

  • Chronic Nasal Congestion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chronic Sinusitis
  • Frequent Nose Bleeds

Nose Reshaping

This is a highly specialized and individualized procedure. The details of the procedure varies from person to person and will be explained to you thoroughly by your plastic surgeon at your complimentary consultation.

Rhinoplasty procedures are performed using either an Open Technique or a Closed Technique. Surgeons prefer to operate using the closed technique because the incisions are made inside the nostril and scarring is not visible after surgery. However, to achieve the desired look, it is not always possible to use this technique. The incision for an Open Rhinoplasty is made horizontally along the vertical strop of tissue located between the nostrils. Scarring from this technique is minimal and will fade over time.

Once the incision is made, your plastic surgeon will lift the skin away from the bone and cartilage and the nose is sculpted into the desired look. Once this is complete, the incisions are closed and a splint will be placed over the nose. This will help protect and maintain the new shape of the nose. Splints may also be used inside the nostrils if necessary.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Swelling & Bruising After Nose Surgery

After surgery you may experience some bruising under the eyes. Most of the time bruising appears after two days and dissipates gradually after that over the next few weeks. Arnica supplements and pineapple juice have been known to help decreasing bruising.

It is normal for nose surgery patients to experience puffiness around their whole face for about a week after surgery. A cold compress will help alleviate some of the swelling. The nose will remain swollen for about a month, but you will be able to see results immediately after the splint is removed. Slight swelling may be present for up to a year after surgery.

Pain After Nose Surgery

Typically rhinoplasty patients do not experience much pain after surgery. You may experience a dull headache or mild discomfort, which can be alleviated by pain medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon. Your nose will be sensitive for a few months after surgery. It is important to not bump or impact your nose after surgery.

Achieving Best Results After Your Rhinoplasty

It is important to carefully follow all of the instructions provided to you from your plastic surgeon to obtain optimal results. It is important to keep your head elevated and to rest the first day after surgery. You will be able to move around and function regularly after a few days. Your splint will be removed and you will be able to return to work about one week after surgery. Strenuous activities can be resumed approximately one month after your procedure.

Rhinoplasty Risks

Common complications occurring after rhinoplasty include:

  • Nosebleed
  • Infection
  • Negative Reaction to Anesthesia
  • Small Bursted Blood Vessels
  • Assymetry

These risks are very uncommon and can be reduced by selecting a qualified plastic surgeon. It is important to ask your surgeon about these risks and how they can be reduced and how they can be treated in the event they do occur.

Non Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non surgical rhinoplasty procedures are becoming increasingly popular among patients today. You can smooth out the indentations or bumps in your nose by having your plastic surgeon inject dermal fillers, such as Restylane or Radiesse.
